The 2011 edition of the Conference provides a forum to:


  1. Strengthen the global framework for sport for development and peace by defining a common vision; defining priorities; promotion and mainstreaming of  policies.


  1. Develop polices that support collaboration based on sport for development priorities; supporting integration/mainstreaming of policies; decision making and allocation of resources related to policy.


  1. Plan resource mobilisation strategies; funding mechanisms; multi-stakeholder arrangements; engaging sport organisations / civil society / athletes / private sector.


  1. Share evidence of impact of sport for development initiatives; monitoring; evaluation and quality assurance tools; benchmarking and research.

Objectives of the 2011 Conference

1. Promoting Global Partnerships

As the overarching theme of Next Step 2011, these keynote sessions are intended to provide an overview of MDG 8, capturing the essence of global partnerships and exploring the realities and possibilities of global partnerships in the context of Sport for Development.


Note that these presentations would be followed by a working group session intended to focus on identifying risks, benefits and examples of best practice in the promotion of global partnership in Sport for Development from among the attending delegates.



2. Monitoring and Evaluation

These sessions are intended to explore the existing realities of M&E within the Sport for Development context and to highlight the different agendas, approaches and capabilities between and among practitioners, academics and funding agencies.


Note that these presentations would be followed by a working group session intended to focus on the task of identifying risks, benefits and examples of best practice in monitoring and evaluation in Sport for Development from among the delegates within each working group.


3. Resource Mobilization

Keynote sessions are intended to provide a general overview of the realities of resources presently being accessed in various Sport for Development settings. The presentations would explore creative strategies for accessing and managing resources.


Note that these sessions would be followed by a resource mobilisation panel presentation from selected Sport for Development organisations to highlight lessons learnt from the real world.


4. Policy

Presentations on this theme, involve the exploration of examples from national, regional and international agencies to provide a general appreciation of the existing policies that guide Sport for Development programming, decision-making and allocation of resources in the context of global partnerships.


Note that these presentations would be followed by a working group session intended to focus on identifying major gaps and discrepancies in the existing Sport for Development policy and to make recommendations to address these gaps and discrepancies.

About the Conference

The conference is intended to provide participants with current information related to the field of Sport for Development, through research based presentations from selected experts in the field. Next Step also provides a forum for meaningful discourse of local, regional and international policies and programs, related to current international trends in sport for development to be take place.

Themed “Global Partnerships for Development,” Next Step 2011 is committed to strengthening collaboration among key stakeholders in the field of sport for development and provides opportunities for participants to reflect on the realities and possibilities of global partnerships around the key areas of policy, resource mobilization and monitoring and evaluation. The Conference is designed to allow for a significant amount of interaction and sharing between and among delegates in an effort to capture the broad and varied experiences of SfD practitioners, development agencies, researchers and leading experts in the field.
